‘I immediately ordered an internal investigation’: Peel Regional Police sergeant charged with assaulting Brampton women

A Peel Regional Police sergeant is facing assault and weapons charges following a seven-month internal investigation into on-duty incidents.

Police learned of the allegations in March 2018 and immediately began an internal investigation into the officer’s conduct.

Sergeant Badal Kaushal, who has been with the force 19 years and worked in the Diversity Relations unit, is facing two charges of assault and one charge of assault with a weapon in relation to an on-duty incident that occurred on May 21, 2017 in Brampton. Two women, aged 44 and 33, sustained minor injuries in the encounter.

Kaushal was further charged with one count of assault in connection with an on-duty incident that occurred on July 23, 2017. A 53-year-old man sustained minor injuries in that incident.

Kaushal was suspended with pay as per the provisions of the Police Services Act and will be back in court December 17.

“Our officers are held to a high standard in order to maintain the trust that we have worked so hard to build within our community,” said Police Chief Jennifer Evans. “Upon learning of the allegations, I immediately ordered an internal investigation into the conduct and actions of the involved officer.”
